Keynote address

Leading, Learning...and caring about generative AI

Wednesday 10 April 2024 - 9.00am-10.00am

In the hype around adoption of gen AI in schools, fundamental principles need to be remembered. Framing gen AI with an ethics of care highlights opportunities and risks for school leaders. These include problematics of inclusion, indigeneity, racism, sexism, the law, digital access, student voice, sustainability, citizens’ rights in democracies, teacher professionalism, and teacher recruitment/retention. This keynote maps this volatile territory and offers perspectives from a recent survey of Australian teachers. It also suggests strategies for ensuring that appropriate awareness raising and guidance can be provided for teachers, so that students can be best prepared for a gen AI future.
